WHAT A GOOD CV SHOULD CONTAIN

It is important to note that your CV will not get you a job; it will only provide the opportunity for you to be shortlisted for an interview. This implies that if your CV is not properly prepared and written you wont have the opportunity to prove yourself before the recruiter that you are qualified for the vacant position.
Also, because most recruiters are tight on schedules and will usually have so many CV to sort, it will be relevant that only basic and necessary information is provided in such a way that it catches the attention of the sorters.
It should be noted here that CVs for professional related jobs are different slightly from the CV for a fresh graduate not necessary in terms of format but in areas of key highlights.

2	PROFILE • This section should give a succinct and clear explanation of your experience, achievement in quantitative terms including where you have worked and position held	PROFILE • This should contain relevant achievements that you attained when in school i.e., leadership positions held, industrial service experience and NYSC i.e. teaching or community service involvement
3	ROLE DESCRIPTIONS OR CAREER SUMMARY This will contain all or relevant previous career experiences that are relevant to the position that you are applying for, for example : 1. Date of employment to– / Companys name and position held ( Listed in chronological order) 2. Record of Achievement ( Quantified or highlighted) 3. Brief Job Description	ROLE DESCRIPTIONS • Simply pick your most relevant exposures while in school or during your industrial practices and most importantly your NYSC service experience.( For example, Voluntary role supporting the elderly in a public home and teaching junior secondary students Government and civic education
4	CORE SKILLS AND VALUE PROPOSITION • Emphasis should be placed on key business support skills that will add value to the job and performance standard. For example, ability to speak other languages, use of computer, knowledge of specific software ( CRM, call handling, conflict resolution etc)	CORE SKILLS AND VALUE PROPOSITION • This highlight could be your speed of learning, IT skills, team bonding ability and any other non-academic skills.
5	EDUCATION • This should be in bullet forms and kept brief and should only highlight those qualifications that are relevant to the job. Dates here should be the date that certificates or certifications were issued	EDUCATION • Emphasis should be dates, qualifications and the Institution that were attended. The year should be from the date of admission to date of graduation.
6	REFERENCES It is important to states here that the consent of referees should first be obtained before including them on your CV so that they are aware of such listing and respond appropriately when they are called or written to. For professional it should be that they will be provided upon request Name given upon request should be those who have superintended over your work or those that you directly reported to in the past or at best HR Department where your employment records are kept.	REFERENCES For a fresh graduate, it is better that reference is made to the record office of the department that you graduated from, your project supervisor or family members that hold relevant career position. A referee is not the same as a guarantor hence your referee should be someone who can talk about your work or academic-related experience.
7	DATE AND SIGNATURE Your CV should be dated and signed. This will enable you to know when it requires update peradventure if you have acquired new qualifications or new work experience.	DATED AND SIGNED It should be dated and signed

NOTE:
A CV should be properly proofread and studied, you should have a thorough and good knowledge of your CV and what they contained. Never, list any skills that you have not acquired as done by many people who just picked and edit a template without paying attention to the issues highlighted.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CURRICULUM VITAE (CV) AND RESUME

I am sure that a discerning mind, would ask the question, IS A CV THE SAME OR DIFFERENT FROM RESUME?
Is a cv different from a resume? So, what is a resume and what are the differences between a Curriculum Vitae and a Resume?
WHAT IS A RESUME?
A resume is a compact and concise document with BASIC highlights about the owner. It is usually on one or two pages. It is a more adaptive and customizable document that can be changed for different job positions. In short, it is an abridged document and may not necessarily be arranged in chronological order.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A CV AND A RESUME

I am making this differentiation so that when applying for jobs abroad or in some multinational organizations when you are sure of the origin of the entity it may help you understand their orientation and what is preferred.

DIFFERENCES	CV	RESUME
LENGTH	Usually between two and more pages with detailed information. It states the full history of ones career and records that are relevant to the job.	Between one and not more than two pages. It is brief and concise. It focuses on targeted skills and values
PURPOSE	CV is used in UK, New Zealand, Ireland, and Europe, most countries in African and a blend of both resume and CVs in some. Majorly for job purposes and also for academic, grants or research oriented positions. CV is used in Germany for above-listed purposes and it called Lebenslauf.	In the USA, Canada resume is the preferred application document but for academic and research oriented position and jobs abroad they use CV
LAYOUT	CV follows a chronological order in most cases and it is static in nature	Highly flexible and allows for individuals style for adaptive purposes

Please note, however, that in countries like Australia, South Africa, and Indian CV and resume are used interchangeably and resume is preferred when applying for private sector jobs while in the civil service you need a CV.

CV WRITING, COVER NOTE LETTER, JOB SEARCH AND INTERVIEW GUIDE

I must sincerely thank all who follows this blog and made very insightful criticisms and suggestions on how it could be of more value in addressing issues of relevance. These suggestions have made me tailor my write-ups to such issues that are uppermost in the minds of the readers.
It is of particular interest when a request was made that I should provide a guide on CV/resume writing, job search procedures and on how to secure a choice job. I will address all three issues in the next three articles that I will post in the next few days apart.
Objectively, the intention of this blog post is to relate over 19 years of human resource management practice and issues that bother on recruitment, selection, and staffing. I have met quite intelligent job seekers who could not secure a job placement simply because their Cvs were not properly written to attract an invitation from recruiters or headhunters. While some job seekers have beautiful and well-structured CVs they dont know how to search for organizations that require their services, in fact, most of such applicants failed to understand the differences between online job search, unsolicited application and how to respond to media job advertisement.
Lastly, in the last part of this article, I will talk extensively about best practice interview guidelines and how to get a job when invited for an interview.

HOW TO WRITE CURRICULUM VITAE THAT STANDS OUT

WHAT IS A CURRICULUM VITAE?

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) has a Latin origin and it simply means Course of Life. Or what we call your journey of life.This implies that it is a more comprehensive document highlighting the holders biography. It gives clear and detailed information such as bio-data, educational qualifications, achievements, publications, courses attended, honors, awards etc. CV is usually between two pages and more, it has a chronological order and in most cases static, hence, it does not require changes when applying for different job positions. It is generic in nature. Cvs are commonly used in Europe, United Kingdom, Asia, and African.
